New Albany, Miss.- The Blue Mountain Christian men's tennis team opened Southern States Athletic Conference play against a strong opponent as the Toppers faced No. 22 UT Southern in their first conference matchup of the season.
Despite a competitive effort throughout the lineup, Blue Mountain Christian ultimately fell 5–2 in the match.
In doubles play, the Toppers were competitive on multiple courts.
Adriaan Engelbrecht and
Luis Lainer battled closely on the No. 1 court but were narrowly defeated 5–7.
Pablo Cruz and Kevin Kotzé also played a tight match on the third court before falling by the same 5–7 score.
On the No. 2 court,
Craig Blevins and
Maj Langerholz were bested 1–6 as UT Southern secured the early doubles advantage.
Singles play featured several hard-fought battles. Engelbrecht showed resilience at the top of the lineup, dropping the first set 3–6 before responding with a 6–4 victory in the second to force a decisive third set, where he ultimately fell 2–6.
Cruz delivered one of the highlights for the Toppers, earning a strong straight-set victory with scores of 6–3, 7–6.
Juan Daniel Aravelo was defeated in his match 2–6, 0–6, while Blevins fell 0–6, 1–6.
Kotzé battled through a tightly contested match, taking the opening set 6–3 before narrowly losing the second set 6–7 and falling in the deciding third-set tiebreaker 2–6.
Luis Lainer secured the other point for Blue Mountain Christian, turning in an impressive performance with a 6–1, 6–3 victory.
Although the final result favored the 22nd-ranked Firehawks, the match served as a strong early test for the Toppers as they continue conference play.
