GREENVILLE, Ala. – (
Results) No. 24 Blue Mountain Christian Men played solid this week at the 2023 SSAC Championship held at RTJ Cambrian Ridge, taking a runner-up to No. 3 Dalton State.
The men were tied for first after the opening round but would slip back to second and hang there to finish the event, shooting 294-297-298.
The entire Topper team would finish inside the Top 20 individually with this being their first SSAC Championship runner-up.
Blue Mountain's
Pontus Nordstrom led the way for his team, finishing 4
th overall shooting 72-72-74-218, while
Deacon Rudolph was 5
th shooting 73-71-75-219. Both men were named to the SSAC's All-Tournament Team.
Amalio Vega shot up the leaderboard on the last two days to finish 9
th at 75-76-74-225, while
Patrick O'Connor jumped seven spots in the final round to finish tied at 13
th shooting 84-71-73-228.
Chasen Poole also tied at 13
th for Blue Mountain, shooting 73-77-78-228 and
A.J. Martin finished tied at 19
th shooting 74-79-78-231.
"I couldn't be prouder of these guys and the work they have put in this season," BMCU head coach
Kevin Barefield said. "This year has been filled with so much success including our national ranking and first SSAC Championship runner-up. I am so grateful and blessed to coach these guys and see the daily dedication and passion they have for each other and the game of golf. This has been a special year, and one we will never forget."
With the regular season and conference championship over, BMCU still has an outside chance of receiving a bid to the NAIA National Championship Tournament slated for May 16-19 in Mesa, Ariz. Up to 30 teams plus individuals will qualify for the national tournament and pairing will be announced soon by the NAIA.
